Influenza Update
With influenza-like-illness activity continuing to decline locally, provincially and nationally, the Region of Waterloo Public Health has announced they are curtailing their H1N1 response efforts. The attached bulletin issued on December 18 explains that this weekly bulletin will now only be distributed if new developments emerge or if urgent H1N1-related information needs to be communicated.
A few, scaled-down clinics are being offered for H1N1 and seasonal vaccines in January and the dates and locations are listed on the attached bulletin.
The Region of Waterloo Public Health Department has recognized the support that community partners including school boards and schools have provided.

WCI's Outdoor Classroom
WCI's Outdoor Classroom has received a generous donation of $2000 from the KW Community Foundation. This, along with $4000 from TD Friends of the Environment, means we are almost fully funded and will have the classroom in the ground and ready for use by the end of the year. Thank you to our generous sponsors and stay tuned for the grand opening next spring.Mr. Pavey, WCI History Teacher Wins 2009 Governor General's Award
We are very pleased and proud to announce that Brent Pavey, a History teacher at Waterloo Collegiate Institute, is one of only seven teachers from across Canada and two in Ontario who are recipients of the 2009 Governor General's Awards for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History.Every year, the Awards recognize teachers from elementary and secondary schools who have inspired and challenged students to explore Canadian history in a unique, interactive way.
On November 20, 2009, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada presented the Awards at Rideau Hall. Another highlight of the Award festivities was the gala dinner and a rare insiders' tour of the Library and Archives Canada Preservation Centre.
Brent Pavey commented, "Needless to say, I am really pleased, and proud. Pavey continued, "The very best part, actually, is that Lucky Manku and Megan Stacey, the students who nominated me also get to attend the ceremony in Ottawa."
The seven recipients were awarded $2,500 and a gold medal and their respective schools also benefited from a cash gift of $1,000. Congratulations and well done Mr. Pavey!!!
